I really should read through tutorials more thoroughly, instead of cut and paste and get it published. David Raynes' MTRandomEntries plugin only generates a random entry when you rebuild the page, and I didn't realise that's what was happening. Because I was rebuilding often when I changed everything, it looked as though the quotes were changing too. Only when I tried refreshing a page did I realise it wasn't working as I wanted.
So back to Querying a MySQL database with PHP. I had to change the code slightly to compensate for the path error I got the first time I tried this method. I worked out how to format the query result too, easy when you know how, but it took me a while to realise the code was staring at me the whole time in the query itself. It's working beautifully and though it took me three days I know a whole lot more now.
The quotes themselves are harder to find than I first thought. I wanted something a bit more substantial than one-liners. Though I don't profess to be religious, it seems they are the sort that has the most thought provoking content. (In my opinion). I look for something that inspires me, and hope it will you too.
One site I found that I keep going back to is Yuni Words of Wisdom.
