It's been another one of those days when nothing seems to go right. I tried installing a DSL modem today that should have been a quick and straight-forward procedure. But alas, it wasn't to be so simple.
After the setup and installation of the modem, when according to Windows the modem was connected, there was no page to display in Internet Explorer. I must have checked and rechecked a dozen times before I got on the phone to the ISP. They had no activity at all on the line, and I couldn't get a solid green light at all on the modem (a Netcomm), I took the modem to all the phone sockets in the house (4) and tried them all separately, still no solid light. The problem was either the modem or the phone lines according to the guy on the phone, and if I wanted him to log a line-check with Telstra and they found nothing wrong with it the cost would be $99. So I brought the modem home to test it on my phone line, and sure enough, a solid green light. Nothing wrong with the modem. So now it looks like we go ahead with the line-check and pray that it is that. It was a thoroughly frustrating day.
Tonight I installed a new hard drive in the other computer that's been here for days, and everything is proceeding along nicely. Before putting the drive in I added it to my computer and formatted and partitioned the drive with the I386 folder on the disk. I put an image of the xp-sp2 disk on there too along with a copy of Alcohol 120%, ideal for mounting the image onto a virtual cd-drive. It has speeded up the installation considerably, only 35 minutes. For smartdrive to work properly I had to copy it to the C: drive first, and it's made a huge difference to the install speed.
