What Not To Do When Your Child Is Being Bullied

I had a totally terrible experience this afternoon. My son, Alex, was at our local skate-park for most of the afternoon, and when he came home was crying because someone snapped his skateboard, and several of the kids there ganged up on him and were hitting him with sticks. He left his bag and the skateboard there and came home.

I did something I'd advise most parents not to do - went there ranting and raving, shaking with anger, threatening to go to the police, and fully barred Alex from going back to the skatepark. Poor kid, it wasn't his fault, and of course, no-one knew who broke the skateboard. How bloody typical. God I was angry. Alex is 10 and most of the kids there were older than him. I was angry at the fact they didn't stick up for him. I won't be letting Alex back there in a hurry.

"Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces."
