Sidebar Changes

I love the look of the Movable Type Weblog and was interested to know how Michael set up his sidebar. He talks briefly about how the site is set up and has a great FAQ section.

I've changed the style slightly to suit my own design and am pleased with the result. The sidebar certainly looks tidier than it did, with the centered images. My next task is to get the same look for the tabbed navigation. Now there lies a challenge, especially with all the trouble I had with the tab-nav when viewed in different browsers.

One little change in my weblog templates affects more than one weblog, so there's usually a few pages to change. I made the tab-nav bar smaller and those changes needed to be made to the Gallery and the Quotes weblog, as well as the changes to the sidebar. I change the look of my site more often than I change the water in my fish tank (yes, the glass is green!!).

An article in the MT Forum that caught my attention was how to integrate a WYSIWYG editor into MT. The writer gives detailed instructions and it looks easy. He uses Htmlarea by Interactive Tools. This could be next on my to-do list.

Update: I should have read the date of the article - Feb 15 2003, so of course the templates in MT 3.16 are nothing like back then. There's no tables for a start. After looking at the edit_entry.tmpl file I'm thinking I could add a couple of functions, like text-color, highlight, bulleted lists and insert table. That would be cool. It may also be way beyond me, but I have the javascript source from editor.js and the icons, so it may not be too hard. I'll keep a record of what I do, and upload if it works.

Augustine

"Your persistent longing is your persistent voice. But when love grows cold, the heart grows silent. Burning love is the outcry of the heart! If you are filled with longing all the time, you will keep crying out, and if your love perseveres, your cry will be heard without fail."

:: St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430, Theologian, Philosopher
