I have an interview at 2 pm tomorrow for the new job I'm hoping to get. The GIS expert at work is looking for an assistant to help with a project that involves 5 local councils and I'm hoping to be a part of it for the next 3 years. The GIS stuff is pretty exciting. Since Google Earth made an appearance, GIS is on everyone's lips. At present I'm working 2 hours a day on the project, and the assistant will get on-the-job training with TAFE Certification at the end of a course that Michael (the expert) is running. There's lots of interesting parts to the job. So far I've had to design a database so we can enter metadata from the mapping, then there's an online mapping package (Exponare) that needs lots of work so there'll be website design involved. I need to learn how to use the Business Contact Manager that's an add-on for Microsoft Outlook, and design forms and reports in Outlook. Then there's Mapinfo, the software we use to perform the graphical analysis. The office is full of high-tech gadgetry: plotters, GPS equipment, spectrographs, and God only knows what else.
I'm feeling good about the interview but will be glad when it's over. There's about 6 applicants, a couple of which have degrees in GIS but know little about much else that's needed for the job. I know little about GIS but lots about the rest, so my chances are reasonably good. I'll probably know by the end of the week.
