There was some happy home computing for a while but the internet kept dropping out and system usage was at 100 percent, so after a bit of procrastination, I finally bit the bullet and restored a January ghost image that was a good, clean install. I spent most of yesterday bringing the computer up to date and reinstalling updated software. Now the computer is zipping nicely through every chore and staying online without any problems.
I'm sure all of my problems have stemmed from the backdoor trojan that I had recently, that was never properly cleaned out. I had yesterday off work (it was the Council picnic) and spent a good 8 hours fixing the computer. Nothing is ever fast and easy when it comes to computers, I was dreading rolling it back. I didn't trust system restore to do the job properly, because it wanted to roll back all the drives, and after trying and trying, I couldn't do a clean install. My internet connection is even faster now. I don't know why but am grateful. I haven't tested the network yet but am hoping there'll be no major problems, ip addresses are set the same so connecting should be no drama for the other 3 computers in the house.
My last chore before bed was another Norton Ghost backup so I have a wonderful image in case anything goes wrong in the future. I think I'll make it a monthly task, and if I need a rollback, it won't be such a drastic choice.
