Does everyone with a home network suffer the problems that I have? For two weeks now my daughter Carly has been unable to properly access the internet from her computer. We have wireless connections on all the computers in the house, and for some unknown reason the lan light on the wireless access point (WAP) has been orange. Carly has been able to use Messenger, can access the MSN website, and Google will return a search entry, but she hasn't been able to follow any of the links. No other sites would open. I searched the internet and it seemed like we were the only ones with this problem. Initially I thought there was a DNS problem, but after downloading a couple of tools today to check and/or fix this, it turns out not to be a DNS problem, even though the error from IE kept saying "cannot download site from DNS". Frustration plus once again!
I reinstalled the software for the WAP again and again without fixing the non-lan activity, funny because we could access each other's computers. Eventually I discovered the problem was with Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). I had it associated with my Lan network card, which is where the WAP is plugged into, and because ICS sets the associated network card with the 192.168.0.1 IP address, it was stuffing up the settings for the WAP (which was originally 192.168.40.10). Today I've set it up with the Wireless card and now Carly's computer is working beautifully and I have three green lights on the WAP.
Every time I have a problem with the networking, I have trouble remembering which configuration I've had. This time I've drawn myself a little mud map with IP addresses. Fingers crossed there'll be no more headaches.
