I took the plunge on Sunday afternoon and decided to upgrade my Movable Type installation. It ended up taking me until 1am on Monday morning to get my blog back up.
I spent a good deal of time just trying to export my mysql database. Just around the 90% downloaded mark I kept getting an error saying the serve had been reset. I was so frustrated I felt like kicking something. Meanwhile I did a backup using Typemover, an MT plugin that is a nice backup and restore tool that gives you lots of options. I waded through the instructions for installing MT to a new directory in an "mt" folder and uploaded the large amount of files to my server. I had a couple of files that I'd renamed, so needed to do the same to the new version ones. Then there was the plugins that were already installed. Lots of bits of code here and there and changes that needed to be made. This is where my problems started, because the mt.cfg file is called mt-config.cgi in the new version. Any plugin that referred to the old filename had to be doctored. Blogroll referred to pieces of code in files that didn't exist and I uninstalled it completely after MT refused to load. The security code in comments wouldn't work either so all that code needed to be removed.
Hours later, after finally backing up the database (which I didn't need to use) and getting all the bugs worked out in the new installation, I managed to get MT to let me log in (that was another problem) and it was with a feeling of relief that I got to see what the changes were in the new version. I have to say it's been well worth all the effort because there's lots of new features in the new version that are great. I love System Overview, and it's a bonus that you can have unlimited blogs with the free version (which I have, thankyou MT). There's a better plugins management area where I learned about the security code not working properly, but the other 15 or so survived the upgrade so I'm happy.
Yesterday I found an updated version of MT Blogroll so I will probably install the new version, unfortunately I haven't got a list of all the urls in my list. Some I transferred over to the del.icio.us listing and the rest are no doubt in my favourite bookmarks. I'll look for another security code feature too, though I see this version of MT has more security so the code may be unnecessary.
