The problems I've been having with the mt-comment.cgi and mt-tb.cgi have taken the shine off blogging for me, and Movable Type in particular. I don't know if other people are having the same issues, but I've been pulling my hair out trying to sort it out.
Three days ago I got this message via email from my hosting providers:
The scripts we have disabled are:
mt-tb.cgi
mt-tb.pl
mt-comments.cgi
mt-comments.pl
I read a post by Jay Allen who advised changing the settings from static publishing for archives to dynamic publishing in an effort to reduce server loads. Spam attacks are rapid requests that cause rebuilding in the case of static pages, and switching to dynamic publishing means the archive templates are not rebuilt upon comment or TrackBack submission.
I've emailed the host providers with this suggestion, hoping they'll re-enable the scripts to let me try this. I'm still waiting on a reply, so in the meantime, comments and trackbacks have been disabled. Sorry for the inconvenience, and to all the spammers, shame on you!

It's been a long night but comments are finally working again, on this weblog at least. There's still work to do on my other blogs.
Thanks to Timothy Appnel for a couple of suggestions to avoid having my archives dynamically rebuilt, and losing some of my plugins. This is all working great now, and let's hope the server load is reduced also.
