Comments Working Again

I've spent the better part of two days editing and re-editing my templates to get everything up and running again. First I switched to dynamic publishing, then back again to static pages so I didn't lose the plugin functionality of some of my cute little features, like gravatars and favourites icons that don't work when pages are built dynamically.

I've installed MT-Akismet and MTAutoBan to help solve the spam attack problem, and included a cron-job to periodically close comments and trackbacks on older entries with a script called mt-closure.

It's all trial and error, but I now have a glimmer of hope that MT isn't so bad after all. I was becoming a very jaded blogger but my faith has been restored thanks to Timothy Appnel, of Appnel Solutions (also the author of Akismet and mt-closure).

Now that I've installed Autoban, I'm hoping this solution will fix the server overload problem that caused me all the headaches.

The goal of this plugin is to slow down the flood of junk objects by banning the IP source addresses that generate them. This makes it easier to check the junk objects for bad filtering and makes denial of service effects from excessive amount of junk much less likely. By doing the banning at the Apache webserver level instead of in Movable Type itself, the runtime cost of the banning is minimized. With a good set of filters, even large groups of systems are rapidly banned with little effect on the weblog.
