It's the final day of the Saturday cricket competition, and although I signed Alex up for football yesterday, there's 4 weeks before the winter sport begins. I can finally have a sleep in on a Saturday morning, something I've been looking forward to since we started back after the Christmas break. Two weeks ago he snapped the handle on his cricket bat, that was only new in October, so I took it back and we ended up with an even better one. Meaty, was Alex's description.
Usually I spend my time in the canteen on a Saturday morning, and have enjoyed it immensely, though last week I had to score. I've done that once before at a school cricket game early last year and wasn't sure I could remember what to do, but after a couple of the boys sat with me for a while I was right and I loved it. I may have to do the same this week. It's a great way to know exactly what's happened in the games and get to know which kid belongs to which face. To be honest, I hope I am scoring.
When we're in the canteen we're too busy talking to take much notice of the game, and many a time I've missed a good hit from Alex or a catch that I should have seen.
Today there'll be presentations and speeches, with hot pies and sausage rolls for the kids afterwards so it will go on a little longer than usual. Alex stayed at his Dad's and I'll collect him on the way. He's growing up. This photo was taken at the Year 6 farewell in December, and he looks a very handsome in his new shirt.

I have less than a year now to give up smoking, I promised the kids I'd give up before I turn 50. The count-down has begun.
