No Luck With Computer Problem

Tonight I ran the faithful old Spybot Search and Destroy, and I had 23 spyware nasties. This time I finally think I've fixed what's been wrong with my computer. It was the Windows Active Desktop that had the registry entry changed to W! (what the???). I guess it was that causing the terrible desktop experience I've had for the last few weeks. Surprisingly, neither Spyware Doctor nor AVG's AntiSpyware caught it.

I was so sure I'd fixed the computer last night, and was horrified when the desktop started it's mad flickering today, and both web browsers started going crazy on me again. I could have cried, it's been such a frustrating experience.

...Well, after reading another forum post, I'm not so sure I've fixed the problems after all. This registry entry ending: NoHTMLWallPaper!=W=1, has been written about extensively.

Those Registry entries *restrict* your system from using Active Desktop, which is a good thing. Active Desktop is a known infection vector, and disabling it is the wise thing to do. Spybot flags those and similar entries simply because they are changes from the defaults that it isn't sure should be occurring. The results you're getting from Spybot with regard to those specific Registry entries should be ignored.

21 of the entries that Spybot found were to do with the Zango Toolbar, also associated with Incredimail, which was left behind after I did an uninstall. Maybe it was that. They're gone now, and God I hope my problems are gone too.
