Caterpillars

Caterpillar Caterpillars can be collected from gardens and the leaves of flowers throughout the summer. Remember not to remove then from the leaf where you find tham and to give them fresh leaves of the same kind every day.

After a time, the caterpillar will build itself a cocoon (called a chrysalis). Then, a couple of weeks later, it will emerge as a butterfly or moth and will want to fly away. Do not try to keep butterflies or moths or they will soon die.

Some caterpillars and most butterflies have beautiful markings. You could make a collage of a butterfly from tissue paper. To make the wings identical in size and design, paint the shape of one wing and then fold the paper in half before the paint dries.
