Ribbon-Covered Journal

Beautify a pre-purchased journal with colourful ribbons and fusible interfacing to create this best-selling cover.
Okay, so you can't judge a book by its cover. But if you could, this beribboned beauty would be a best-seller, for sure! The project starts with a purchased journal, which you embellish with fabric and ribbon. To create a complete desktop set, apply coordinating ribbons to an assortment of small boxes to hold office supplies. Or, for a new mother, decorate a photo frame with pastel ribbons and present it as a gift at a baby shower.
Pin your work to an ironing board to keep it steady for pressing.
What You Need:
- Ruler
- Journal
- Pencil
- Tracing paper
- Scissors
- Fusible interfacing
- Ironing board
- Assorted ribbons ranging from 3/8 inch to 3 1/2 inches wide (sheer, wire-edged, metallic, solid-color, and floral)
- Straight pins
- Press cloth
- Iron
- Thick white crafts glue
- Decorative paper

Set your iron based on the instructions that come with your fusible interfacing.
Instructions:
Measure the length and width of the journal front cover. Add 1 inch to each measurement. Use these measurements to draw a rectangle pattern on tracing paper.
Using the pattern as a guide, cut one rectangle from fusible interfacing and place it, fusible side up, on an ironing board. Arrange ribbons vertically over the interfacing, pinning the ends directly to the ironing board.
Cover the ribbons with a press cloth and, following the manufacturer's instructions, fuse them with a warm iron. Remove the pins. Turn the fused assembly over, cover with the press cloth, and press again from the wrong side.
Press under 3/8 inch on one edge of the fused piece. (This pressed edge is for the left side of the journal cover.) Glue the folded edge to the cover. Wrap the fused piece around the right side of the cover and glue the edge inside the cover. Repeat for the top and bottom.
Cut a piece of decorative paper 1/8 inch shorter and narrower than the inside journal cover. Glue the paper in place, covering the raw edges of the ribbon. Wrap a length of narrow ribbon lengthwise around the book front, tying the ends in a bow.
