Raining Frogs and Toads

frogs_rain.jpgIn 1954 in Birmingham, England, there was a heavy rainstorm and to the amazement of the people in the streets, hundreds of small frogs came down with the rain. The frogs fell on people's hats, coats and umbrellas. They landed on cars, on the roof tops and on the footpaths. The frogs fell gently and didn't seem to be hurt by their fall, and just hopped happily away.

For hundreds of years there have been reports of animals falling from the sky like this. Maybe this is why we say "it's raining cats and dogs" when we're talking about a very heavy fall of rain, though there hasn't been any reports of cats or dogs coming down in the rain. Frogs, toads, rats, mice, fish, shellfish, snails, worms, lizards, snakes and even alligators have all been seen coming down out of the sky.

In 1834 a Pennsylvania newspaper reported that a large number of mussels had fallen into a prison yard. The prisoners were very pleased, and quickly opened the mussels and ate them.

These reports of raining animals are strange and hard to believe. What is also strange is that these creatures landed lightly and were not hurt by their falls.

Not every creature to have fallen in this way has been alive. At a factory in India in 1830 people saw what they thought was a flock of birds flying down fast toward the ground. This turned out to be a shower of large fish and they were all dead. Some were fresh, some were rotten and smelly, and some had no heads.

Often these falls from the sky happen when it is raining hard, but sometimes animals come out of a clear sky.

How does it happen? Could a whirlwind pick up some frogs from a pond and later drop them on a street? Maybe, but a whirlwind wouldn't take only one sort of animal. It would take fish and mud and pond weed too. So what is the answer? Do you know?

Phantom Islands

Wikipedia lists 37 phantom islands. These are islands that are believed to exist and appear on maps for a period of time (sometimes centuries), and then are removed after they are proven not to exist (or the general population stops believing that they exist).

buss_map.jpgBusse Island.

This is the story of a mysterious island. A busse is a small ship with three masts. In 1578 one was sailing near Greenland, an icy country near the North Pole. There was a bad storm and the busse was being tossed about in the waves. The captain decided to ride out the storm in the shelter of a nearby island.

The next morning when the captain looked at his map, he was surprised to find that the island was not marked on it.

Some of the crew rowed across and found that the island was quite bare. There were no plants of any kind. The only things living there were seabirds. The captain and his crew named the island Busse Island after their ship.

In 1609 Henry Hudson in his ship the Discoverie, was on his way to Greenland. He saw Busse Island and sailed towards it. Suddenly, to his amazement, the island sank beneath the waves and disappeared.

After hearing about this, people began to refer to Busse Island as "mystery island". Many sailors went looking for it, but nobody found it until 1635 when Captain Fox sailed past it. He reported that it was a large island with ice around part of it and that it looked strange.

In 1671 Captain Shepherd went fishing in the bay at Busse Island. He also made a map of it and after this, new maps had the island marked on them. But in 1745 somebody else drew a map and on this map the shape of Busse Island was quite different.

More and more people became interested in the island. Lots of sailors visited it and drew maps. The strange thing was - every map was different. Could it be that Busse Island kept changing its shape?

In 1775 some more sailors decided to visit the strange island and map it. But they were just too late. As they sailed towards it, the island began to move. The captain and crew watched in amazement as Busse Island sank into the sea. Not even a rock was left to show where it had been.

Since then, many people have gone looking for the mysterious island, but it has never been seen again. Perhaps it was only an illusion, something that sailors only "thought" they saw.

Signs of the Zodiac and Constellations

In the pattern of the stars in the starry night sky, men saw figures, creatures and symbols. From these were born the twelve signs of the zodiac that we know now and, from the zodiac, the calendar was created.

The Constellations

Aries, the ram, has three primary stars which form the horns of the ram.

Pisces, the fish, can only be seen in a very dark sky and looks like two fish joined by a thin line of dim stars.

Aquarius, the water carrier, is a large dim constellation in the shape of a water urn.

Capricornus, the goat, is another faint constellation.

Sagittarius, the archer, lies in the centre of the Milky Way.

Scorpius, the scorpion, contains a bright red star called Antares.

Libra, the scales, contains the northern and southern claws, two bright stars that were once part of Scorpius.

Virgo, the maiden, has one bright star, Spica, which is often confused with a planet.

Leo, the lion, also has a bright luminous star which is often mistaken for a planet - blue Regulus.

Cancer the crab, has Sirius, one of the brightest stars in the zodiac in its constellation.

Gemini, the twins, have two stars to mark their heads, one is more orange and the other is more northerly.

Taurus, the bull, is quite clearly marked with a V-shape of stars for his face. The Pleiades, a group of hot, bright stars surrounded by a blue glow of their own light, are also found in Taurus.

The Signs of the Zodiac

The signs of the zodiac are the twelve symbolic figures that our ancestors imagined whilst observing the stars. They saw shapes, patterns, faces, natural and supernatural beings from which they established, through the centuries, a kind of celestial hierarchy and divine book of beasts. Groupsings of stars became constellations. Twelve of these constallations make up the zodiac, a greek word meaning 'circle of animals and souls'.

The Phenomenal Power of the Human Mind

I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg.

The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid! Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Amzanig huh? Yaeh, and I awlyas thought slpeling was ipmorantt.

If you can't read this, don't feel too bad. Here's what it actually says:

I couldn't believe that I could actually understand what I was reading.

The phenomenal power of the human mind! According to a research at Cambridge University, it doesn't matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be in the right place. The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without a problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but the word as a whole. Amazing huh? Yeah, and I always thought spelling was important.

The Chinese Horoscope

Do you know what Chinese Horoscope animal you were born under? Click here to find out. I was born in the Year of the Dog.

Following the example of the Western zodiac, the Chinese zodiac is an imaginary band comprising twelve signs symbolised by animals. These animals play an important part in the Chinese mythology which is very different from the Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Greek mythologies - sources of inspiration for the Western zodiac. It was the Buddha, around 600BC, who changed the complex and abstruse astrological signs in use to the twelve mythical animals that we know today.

The Buddha, knowing that he had reached the end of his life, invited the twelve animals of the zodiac to come and say goodbye to him before he left for the other world. The first one to arrive was the Rat. This is why the Rat is the first sign of the zodiac during the Chinese solar year. Then came the Ox, then the Tiger, followed by the Rabbit and the Dragon. The Snake was next, with the Horse and the Goat. Then the Monkey arrived, together with the Rooster and the Dog. Finally, the Boar (Pig) which was the last animal to see Buddha alive.

The principal of Chinese astrology lies on a solar-lunar cycle, but also on the cycle of Jupiter whose zodiacal revolution - the time it takes for Jupiter to travel round the zodiac - is twelve years. Each year is dominated by the animal sign through which Jupiter is travelling.

The animal ruling the year of your birth has a major influence on all aspects of your life. The time of day and the season of birth also have some influence.

The Druids

The Druids were the most enlightened and civilizing spiitual influence in prehistoric Europe. They considered ownership collective, and included women in their political and religious life.

The Druids were an indigenous Celtic intelligentsia, evolving from the original wise men and women during the age of the "hunter-gatherer" among the ancient ancestors of the Celts, losing their original functions but retaining the Celtic name of those with "Oak Knowledge". They were to be found ine very part of the Celtic society but it was not until the second century BC that these individual learned functionaries had a collective name - The Druids.

The Celtic Druids were heirs to the same tradition as the Brahmins.

Strabo (64BC-AD24) says the Druids, in addition to the science of nature, study also moral philosophy. They are believed to be the most just of men.

The Druids believe that their religion forbids them to commit their teachings to writing to prevent their pupils from relying on the written word and neglecting to train their memories.

Thjey believe the soul does not perish, but after death passes from one body to another. They think this is the best incentive to bravery because it teaches men to disregard the terrors of death.

They also hold discussions about the heavenly bodies and their movements, the size of the universe and of the earth, the physical constitutions of the world, and the powers and properties of the gods.

The Celts appointed Druids, who were versed in the art of seers and other forms of wisdom without whom Kings were not permitted to plan or adopt any course.

The Druids taught in triads and the basis of their tradition was "to honour the gods, to do no evil, and to practise bravery".
