Some Site Housekeeping

As categories grow so do page-loading times, so last night I did some housekeeping and added pagination to the category page. With 60 posts and growing in the Newsworthy category, this page must have took an age to load for anyone with a dialup or a slow connection.

Pagination splits up a page into smaller, more manageable sizes, and adds navigation to the bottom for the pages it creates. In this case, I've chosen to show 7 posts on each page, in keeping with the main index page.

Getting the style right caused me some problems, but with a little help from the plugin developer, I was able to get the look I wanted.

Techie Talk

Strange things are happening on this weblog that I only just discovered today, and it seems nobody else had noticed either. The dates on the calendar are showing entries for a different blog to this one. Very strange indeed!

Time to take a closer look at the template and see what's going on. I don't often write about technical stuff on this blog, I save all that for The Playground, so if you're looking anything to do with coding that's the place to look. Anyway, after rebuilding all the pages in the blog, the calendar is now displaying the correct dates. I'm still stumped as to the reason for the confusion.

I don't know that using Movable Type is a good idea for people who have no clue about coding, but with all the resources around, and step-by-step tutorials available, it's only a matter of following instructions to get things to work as you would like. I've implemented lots of non-standard code on this site to get the sidebar links I want and mostly I've just followed instructions. I'm no programmer but can usually spot something that doesn't look right.

The Painterly Theme

I need to give credit to the author of the theme I'm currently using. Her name is Anne Halsell and I'm eagerly awaiting the redesign on her site at www.kaisho.org. I love the theme and think it looks great. It's one of the entries in The Style Contest, the best one as far as I'm concerned, and the author has gone to alot of trouble to make sure it behaves how it should on a live blog, and in both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Entries for the Style Contest are coming in thick and fast now, and every time I go back, there's lots more to look at. Some are very good. It will be interesting to see who the judges think is the best entrant. Entries close on 15 May, 2006 and winners will be announced on 2 June so we don't have to wait long for the final decisions.
